There is a great deal of writing about contemporary art, and a great deal of it has the same shape. The major exhibition receives a paragraph of praise. The auction record is reported as a number. The opening is photographed, the catalogue essay summarized, the next show announced.

This publication tries for something different. Slow attention. Long looking. Skepticism of the language the art world uses about itself, particularly the language of importance and inevitability. What interests us is the room behind the room — the conditions under which the work appears, the people whose decisions shape what we end up seeing, the cultural and economic structures that make certain things visible and others invisible.
